Once upon a time, Woodcroft Women’s Club was a group at a crossroads. Officially founded in 1985, the club had started with a few Woodcroft neighborhood women that came together for fun and friendship. As the years passed, the club grew, and new activities were added. One of these was an active Craft Group, co-chaired for many years by Barb Hill and Janell Boyd.

Around 1995, leadership and participation in the WWC had dropped precipitously. A letter went out to the membership indicating the club was on the verge of ending. One day at the Craft Group gathering, Janell announced to the group that if they wanted to save the WWC they would need to take it upon themselves within their group to do so. She said that she would be willing to be the Membership person if others in the Craft Group would volunteer to fill the rest of the board positions. The group decided amongst themselves which positions they would take on and convinced Amy Magee-Hamacher to be President, despite her being pregnant at the time. They sent out information to the club membership list over the summer and worked on recruiting new members as well. Amy ended up serving as president for two years.

As we celebrate WWC’s 40th anniversary, we also celebrate those who keep the fun and the service and the friendship going year after year. We appreciate all those who said yes to joining in and helping out along the way. Contributions of time, talent, money, and ideas combine to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. As Maya Angelou said, “I've learned that youshouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.”
